The Silver value is based on the current Silver Price, which is currently somewhere between $10 and $11 per troy ounce, however the collector's value of the coin may be worth much more. One of the best resources to find estimated values of any world coin is the Standard Catalog of World Coins. It is an excellent resource for information on coins.

The 1997 silver American Eagle is selling for $19.90 and dealers pay less. Silver is down now so it is not wise to sell it at this point but wait till silver goes up. With a mintage of 4,295,004 it is not a scarce date.
